“The takeaway is plain: the biblical text is not straightforwardly factual. The consensus of “many scholars,” however, is.”
It is the not so subtle shift to humanism. Replacing the divine reality of Christ and the word of God with the “factual certainty” of collective scientists/scholars/professionals.
1)Are biblical scholars not to be trusted when they challenge our preconceived notions of how we imagined events of the Bible?
2) How do you reconcile John having Jesus die on a different day than the Synoptics testify? Does that go against scriptures inerrancy too?
3)Can you help me understand why this theory leads to diminishing the inerrancy of the Bible?
4) have you read the SBL article that this is based on? It may help eliminate some of the misconceptions you have.
Just by reading your post, you seem to be conveniently ignoring or belittling many arguments he makes that are grounded in sound archeological and philological studies which you profess to enjoy.
If I had a nickel for every time the “scholarly consensus” betrayed the simple, plainly written truth of Scripture I’d be a very rich man. They act like that’s evidence unto itself - yeah well once upon a time the “scholarly consensus” said the Sun got dragged round the Earth by a chariot.
They deny every aspect of the Cross whenever possible. I’ve had to argue about everything from the carrying of the cross (it was the patibulum) to whether or not the Romans buried people who were crucified. Most recently it was whether or not Christ claimed to be God, because denying him who was on the cross is the chief aim: https://wrathandremnant.substack.com/p/did-jesus-claim-to-be-god
This is what you get when a "Christian college" professor was educated himself at only secular universities. It's backwards. Parents, be wary of the places you send your kids and your hard earned money! 😔
Owen, I have photos I took at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, not what anyone would say was a "Christian museum" showing a nail through a heel from the 1st century. I wanted to share on your Facebook post but I can't comment on any of your posts. I replied to this email with the photos so, hopefully they have gone through.
For some time I have thought that “Christianity Today” is well named. And that is not intended to be a compliment.
Man, isn’t this so common nowadays?

Also Zechariah 12:10, "They will look on me, the One they have pierced..."
My Greek professor at Talbot wrote a response piece to this back in April too: https://churchleaders.com/voices/exchange/510002-yes-jesus-was-crucified-with-nails.html
Is dude's name legitimately Silliman? 🤣
So I have some questions based on this:

That CT article is just so silly, man...
